BMW 5-Series E60 Power Steering Problems – Racks & Pumps

The BMW 5-Series (E60) has variations in the power steering system. Some will have a conventional hydraulic system consisting of a hydraulic power steering rack, power steering pump and a high & low pressure power steering hoses. The high pressure hose will connect the pump to the rack and the low pressure (return) hose will connect the rack back to the reservoir to circulate the fluid.

Other variations will include an electro-hydraulic steering rack – this will be the same as a hydraulic system but will have an assisting electric motor on the valve housing of the power steering rack. The third variation will be the same as the conventional hydraulic system but have a speed sensor fitted to the valve housing of the steering rack.

The speed sensitive steering system of the BMW will tighten the steering at higher speeds to make the driver feel more in control.
