Your BMW 5-Series E39 will have a standard hydraulic power steering system, which consists of a hydraulic power steering rack, a power steering pump, pressure hoses and reservoir. There is a high pressure hose connecting the pump to the rack and a low pressure (return) hose connecting the rack back to the reservoir.
